What a week to write my first BRSC programme notes as your new Chairman!
We saw our team make a confident and emphatic start to the season at Harlequins. Who can argue with the Player of the Match selection, so often our guiding light, Ben Spencer, but our pack was immense to a man, Miles Reid, take a bow. And then there was Max Ojomoh, out of position, lots of pressure and expectation but that pass for Henry Arundell to score was sublime.
Then I watched in the Clubhouse at The Rec as the England senior women's team put on a masterful performance against a spirited Canadian team. England World Cup Winners again! So good for the Women's game and rugby in general. We know it is the club's ambition to bring women's rugby to The Rec and join the Premiership Women's Rugby League. BRSC is sponsoring a player from Bath Ladies again this year. We shall make members aware of matches and encourage all that can, to support them.
I understand there are plans afoot to open the Clubhouse for more rugby "occasions", perhaps the Autumn Internationals, Bath away games on Friday nights when BRSC will not be running coaches (we could gather there?). Look out for further details as soon as we have them.
And then there was the news on Friday, as my Grandfather might say, "Well I'll be blowed!".
I, some of your committee and members were in the Council chamber on Wednesday and witnessed a professional, measured and compelling argument from Bath Rugby, their advisors, Bath Recreation Limited, Bath Community Foundation and Bath Business Improvement District for the new stadium. Bath Rugby's patience and perseverance was further rewarded when the Secretary of State declared that he would not call this in. a process that could have meant further delay and cost.. The new stadium is a "GO".
I should declare an interest at this point, I have had on my "bucket list", taking my seat at the season's opening in the new stadium. I have to say I was beginning to worry, but less so now!
And so to the changing of the guard. Doug leaves us after seven years on the committee, four as Chairman and with BRSC in a dramatically better place. This is a credit to him and the spirit of this club. His passion and commitment makes it a hard act to follow. Thank you Doug, and we wish you well on the back benches, well row K in the East stand!
And finally to me, I continue to be your Treasurer and have unexpectedly stepped up to be your Chairman until the next AGM in 2026. Bath has been part of my whole life, my Grandfather took me to The Rec 60 years ago and it has always been my club.
I have travelled a lot in my working life and I have a confession to make, I have been a season ticket holder at Richmond (rugby going professional was not a universal success!), London Irish (the criach made it well worth it!), Wasps (a club with great heritage but the move to Coventry and COVID was too much for it. They may yet return, never say never...) and, wait for it, Leicester Tigers! We lived in Loughborough for five happy years and it was the only place to go for a rugby fanatic. I have a price to pay, my son (aged 7 at the time) is a Tigers fan. You may have seen my WhatsApp profile picture taken at the Premiership Final 2025, Jonathan in Green, Red and White with Mum and Dad in Blue, Black and White on either side. I think that sums up why this is a sport we all love. Hugely competitive on the field, sociable and respectful off it.
We welcome Sale in that spirit, widely tipped for another top four finish and a five point win in the bag last week against a talented Gloucester team, no such thing as an easy game again this season.
I look forward to meeting you at the gazebo, at our events, and "on the buses"!
This season promises to be an exciting ride, why not join us on the coach to Leicester on 18 October!
