HILL RETURNS TO FACE LEINSTER AHEAD OF RETURN OF PREMIERSHIP

Bath Rugby take to the field for their second friendly since the break in the Premiership Rugby season, with Leinster Rugby heading to The Rec to kick off their St Patrick's weekend.

In a strong matchday squad, Ted Hill will get his first run out after a long-term injury picked up earlier in the season.

Max Ojomoh will also return to Bath's line-up after a stellar performance for England A against Portugal at the beginning of the month.

In the front row, Arthur Cordwell and Thomas du Toit take the prop positions, with Tom Dunn named at hooker.

Elliott Stooke will partner Quinn Roux in the second row, with Hill, Miles Reid and Jaco Coetzee completing an experienced pack.

Louis Schreuder comes in to start at scrum-half, with Orlando Bailey starting at fly-half.

Will Butt is paired with Ojomoh at centre with Ruaridh McConnochie and Joe Cokanasiga named out on the wings.

Tom de Glanville takes the final starting position at full back.

Van Graan opts for 14 substitutions to give game time to a large portion of the squad in this non-competitive period.

Bath Rugby face off against Leinster this Friday, looking to continue the momentum after registering a victory against Gloucester on Foundation Day.

Reflecting on last week’s return to action at the Rec, Will Butt was eager to pick up where he left off before the return of the premiership, and the game against Gloucester had provided that platform for the squad to do that.

“I think everyone was looking forward to getting back on the pitch, getting back on the rec and getting a bit of game time under our belts” he said.

Looking ahead to the challenge on Friday, this will be the first time since the 2021 - 2022 European Champions Cup pool match that Leo Cullen’s side will travel to Bath, a match which saw Leinster win 64-7.

“We played Leinster a few years ago at the Rec and it wasn’t a great outcome for us, so it’s an opportunity to go in and right that wrong and also get a test of an aggressive defence that we know we’re going to feel against Sale the week after.”

Leinster currently sit top of the URC and are undefeated in the Champions Cup, so this game will provide an excellent test against the very best ahead of what promises to be an exciting rest of the season.

“The forefront of our minds is on this Leinster game, Johann said at the end of our session that we just come off the back of about 20 minutes ago, 'it's as important as the game last week, as the last game against Bristol and then the one after against Sale'.”

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION: LEINSTER RUGBY

Sitting top of both their domestic league and Champions Cup pool stages this season, Leinster are shaping up to have another very successful season under Leo Cullen.

This game will be the second friendly game Leinster will have played against Premiership opponents this season, the last being in February where they played Saracens in a 31-19 defeat at the StoneX.

Leinster have 19 players that were selected for Ireland ahead of the 2024 Guinness Six Nations campaign, with many others in their squad looking to break through onto the International stage, Friday’s game will no doubt be an entertaining exhibition of running rugby.

I totally agree with the reasons behind the Gallagher Premiership games being suspended whilst the Six Nations Championship is in progress, but isn’t it great to have rugby being played at The Rec again!

And we were privileged to have two games last weekend. On Friday night, we experienced a brilliant exhibition of rugby from the U20s of England and Ireland, with many supporters saying it was the best game they had seen in a long time. Hopefully we will see many more of these internationals at The Rec in the months and years to come.

Then on Saturday, a dominant performance from the Blue, Black & White against Gloucester Rugby. This also provided the opportunity for a number of our younger squad members to gain valuable game time and for others to debut for Bath Rugby, including Regan Grace and Jacques du Plessis, who was awarded the Foundation Day Champagne Pol Roger Performance of the Match.

Whilst I’m certain we all enjoyed these “back-to-back” matches, it meant a lot of hard work for the behind-the-scenes staff at Bath Rugby, so a massive thank you to all concerned.

This week, we have another treat in store as we welcome Leinster Rugby to The Rec for a game under the lights on Friday night. An evening match always creates a fantastic atmosphere and I’m sure this will be no exception. Whilst it is also the final weekend of the Six Nations Championship, so we probably won’t see Leinster Rugby’s full 1st XV take the field, it will be more useful match time in the preparation for Bath Rugby’s next home game on Sunday 24 March against Sale Sharks in Round 13 of the Premiership, and for us supporters to find our voices again to act as the 16th player.

I am delighted to confirm that BRSC continues to go from strength to strength with our Membership now well on its way to 1,100. At just £10 for a full season Membership (for a single adult) this is a marvellous and tangible way to show your support for Bath Rugby, let alone benefit from the numerous discounts available from 30+ businesses in and around Bath, merely by showing your Membership Card.

BRSC is in the planning stage for several other events in the short term so keep an eye on our website for full details. It’s fast approaching that time of year again for BRSC’s AGM which is scheduled for Tuesday 4 June 2024 in the Clubhouse at The Rec.
