Bath secured a hard fought bonus-point victory over Exeter Chiefs, winning a crucial scrum penalty in the final minutes to claim a 24-26 win on the road.
A Will Muir bonus-point try on 28 minutes would prove the decisive score as Exeter Chiefs fought back from 10-26 down to fall short by just two points as Bath claimed a 24-26 win on the road.
Exeter opened the scoring through a Henry Slade penalty on four minutes, but Bath responded quickly with a score on their own. Captain Ben Spencer sniping from the base and diving over into a mess of bodies. The referee went to the TMO to offer some clarity and ultimately they would award Bath a penalty try, giving Exeter a yellow card for foul play in the act of scoring.
Exeter retook the lead on 18 minutes with a converted try through Jack Yeandle, but that would be short lived as five minutes later, Bath scored their second try of the afternoon. Niall Annett found himself at the back of a driving maul and powered his way over the line to give Bath a 10-12 lead.
With momentum swinging their way, Bath struck again on 27 minutes. The visitors broke through and were brought down just short, they recycled and spread the ball wide to Josh Bayliss who raced over in the corner. Finn Russell added the extras to extend Bath's lead to 10-19.
A minute later Bath would score their fourth and bonus-point try. Breaking though the middle from the kick-off, they looked to exploit the width again and the ball found its way to Will Muir who strode over in the corner. Another Russell conversion would give Bath a healthy 10-26 lead as the half an hour mark loomed.
Both sides had chances but neither could capitalise, and as half-time whistle sounded; Bath remained in front leading 10-26.
Bath started the second half well but some missed chances would hand momentum back to Exeter, who scored their second of the afternoon on 49 minutes through Paul Brown-Bampoe.
Exeter's attack began to fire and Paul Brown-Bampoe ran in the hosts' third try on 58 minutes. Henry Slade's conversion narrowed the deficit to just two points as the game entered its final quarter with Bath leading 24-26.
Neither team managed to take hold in the final 20 minutes. A missed lineout from Bath deep in Exeter's half would see the hosts making ground on the counter attack. They kicked through and Bath were unable to gather cleanly, handing a scrum to Exeter five meters from their own line with just minutes to go. A huge effort from the visitors won them the penalty at the scrum, and would prove the decisive moment as Bath recorded a 24-26 victory over Exeter at Sandy Park.
